Moon Knight Artist Claims He Hasn’t Been Paid for the Use of His Design on the Upcoming Disney+ Show

The Oscar Isaac starrer MCU Disney+ show Moon Knight is set to release next month, and over the past few days, fans learnt more about the character’s live-action debut.

Recently, the Marvel show received another trailer with more footage during Super Bowl LVI, and other than that fans have also got new looks at the character, which includes his Mr. Knight outfit.

Fans were quite excited about the addition of Moon Knight’s alternate personality. While there were questions from the community about Mr. Knight being introduced in the first season itself, most of them were chuffed about the brilliant adaptation of the suit from the comics.

One such fan that was quite happy with this addition was Irish comic book artist Declan Shalvey, who worked on the character’s 2014-2015 run alongside writers like Warren Ellis and Brian Wood.

In a recent tweet, Shalvey showcased his happiness towards the introduction of an outfit he popularized with his work on Moon Knight. While Mr. Knight was introduced in 2011, it seems like the show will take much of the outfit’s inspiration from the Ellis’ run with Oscar Isaac donning a three-piece suit.

Even though, Shalvey was quite content about his design being used for the Disney+ show, it looks like he won’t be getting any monetary benefits from Marvel, as he stated that he wasn’t getting paid at all, when he was asked by a fan on Twitter.

This isn’t the first time a Marvel artist has taken issue with the blatant use of their designs for a live-action adaptation. During the release of the Hawkeye Disney+ show, David Aja who worked on the 2012 run of the character with Matt Fraction, blasted Marvel for not paying him after using his artwork for the show.

This caused a major discourse among comic book fans on whether or not artists should be paid for being a design inspiration to many of the live action adaptations of characters they popularized with their artwork.

Aja’s response to the lack of any monetary benefits from Marvel sparked a major backlash against the creators, and it remains to be seen if Moon Knight will cause a similar problem.
