The 48-year-old dad found himself down on his luck six years ago after his business folded. He’s since turned his life around and taken on a job at his local Morrisons where he has picked up some useful tips for saving money on the food shop.

People from all walks of life are relying on yellow sticker bargains from supermarkets – food that is significantly reduced just before it goes off – to feed their families.

That’s according to an insider who has witnessed the number of people visit his local store increase threefold since the start of the pandemic.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Al Baker said: “Last Friday we had 38 turn up to try and grab a yellow sticker bargain and that’s never happened before.

“It just shows how important these cost savings are.”

While it’s a depressing situation to witness, Al reveals how it wasn’t too long ago that he was reliant on yellow sticker bargains to feed his own family.

“I have been in a situation where I’ve literally just had pennies in my pocket – we’ve struggled massively.

“I was that yellow sticker finder at my local Co-op every single night there to make sure that I grabbed something.

“I’ve been that desperate – luckily I’m a qualified chef so I could always rustle something up out of what was left.”

Al has some great insider tips for finding yellow sticker bargains:

“Most stores will do different reductions – a basic reduction in the morning between 30 and 50 percent depending on how much stock there is to shift.

“All the supermarkets are slightly different, but usually about 6pm we’d then start the final reductions which is between 70 and 80 percent off everything that needs to go.

“Get there early – there’s more of a demand than ever before for reduced food.

“Saturday and Monday evenings are good days to find a bargain.

“If you don’t shop at Morrison’s – ask a member of staff at your local Asda or Tesco what times they tend to bring the reduced items out.”
