International Data Corporation released a report recently stating that smartphone shipments in India grew by 3 per cent year-on-year while witnessing a 1 per cent decline in the year’s first half. A total of 35 million smartphones were shipped to India in Q2.
The reports add that the premium segment – smartphones priced above $500 (around Rs 40,000) – saw the largest growth of 83 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter. The premium smartphone shipments constituted 6 per cent of the market share.
Apple continues to lead the premium smartphone segment in India
Apple continued to dominate the premium segment with a 52 per cent share. Meanwhile, OnePlus and Samsung had 19 per cent and 15 per cent market share, respectively.
At its recent quarterly earnings call, Apple reported that it nearly doubled its revenue in India. And the iPhone tends to drive the most revenue in the country, said Tim Cook.
The mid-range smartphone segment ranging from $200-$300 (around Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000) has grown with a 21 per cent year-on-year increase. The segment constituted 17 per cent of the Indian smartphone market in Q2.
The report notes that the average selling price for smartphones in India has grown to $213 (around Rs 17,000). The research firm notes that better 5G smartphone shipments have led to an increase in the ASP. Furthermore, the mid-range segment has continued to see major launches from different vendors.
IDC expects the shipments to remain flat in the coming quarters for the rest of the year as the inflation continues to impact consumer demand.
