Motorola Edge 40 Pro announcement: a beautiful and well-rounded package

0
Motorola just announced its latest flagship phone, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro, and it is shaping up to be one of the manufacturer’s best handsets so far! The device is a great jump in more ways than one compared to its predecessor, the Motorola Edge 30 Pro, adopting many design choices from the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra model that released last year.

Apart from the design changes, there are several more practical upgrades that affect the phone’s durability and performance, making it a very appealing option in its price range, and possible one of the best Android phones for 2023.

Motorola Edge 40 Pro: what’s new compared to the Edge 30 Pro?

A premium design and build

As mentioned earlier, one of the most obvious changes with the Motorola Edge 40 Pro is its new look and the materials used. It comes in a thin form factor, with a borderless display sandwiched between a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus back and front panels, as well as an aluminum frame.

Besides the improved materials, another durability-related upgrade is the phones IP68 certification for dust/water resistance. Motorola claims the phone can survive depths of up to 1.5 metres in freshwater for up to 30 minutes.

Improved performance

The Edge 40 Pro comes with the latest and greatest of chipsets from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (4 nm), which Motorola claims offers 35% better CPU performance, 25% better GPU performance, and 40% greater power efficiency. Quite frankly you cannot get any better than this at the moment, so we expect some top-notch results during our tests, so stay tuned for those when our review comes out.

The base storage and memory have also been increased, meaning you will pay less for more this year if you decide to go for Motorola’s flagship phone. The entry-level version comes with 12GB of RAM (which is the only memory option) and 256GB of storage. The storage is now also faster, being UFS 4.0 compared to UFS 3.1 that the Edge 30 Pro has from last year.

The Motorola Edge 40 Pro has a telephoto camera

The Motorola Edge 40 Pro seemingly has the same hardware when it comes to its main, ultra-wide, and selfie cameras, but it instead of a useless 2MP depth shooter it now has a 12MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom. This seems to be borrowed from the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra from 2022.

New video shooting modes

  • Night Vision mode is now available while shooting video for better detail, clarity and color reproduction
  • Horizon Lock for stabilizing the footage in dynamic shooting conditions
  • Active auto focus tracking that helps follow the subject and keep it sharp while its moving
  • Portrait mode is now available while shooting video

Better battery life and faster charging speeds

Thanks to the massive power efficiency that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 brings, the Edge 40 Pro has a claimed battery life of over 30 hours on a single charge. That number, however, is bound to be affected depending on the way you use the phone (it’s usually less), so stay tuned for our review where we will do our own battery life tests and give you our results.

The Motorola Edge 30 Pro already came with really good charging speeds, but the Edge 40 Pro is breaking the ceiling with a maximum wired charging of 125W, which the company claims can charge the phone fully in just 23 minutes.

Motorola introduces Moto Spatial Sound

This is just Motorola’s name for spatial sound — a feature that makes sound coming out of the device’s speakers or headphones connected to it feel more immersive and true to life.

A even more capable display

The display on the Edge 30 Pro was already great — it is one of the main pros on Motorola Edge phones to begin with — but the Edge 40 Pro comes with an even better one that has a 165Hz refresh rate compared to the 144Hz on the predecessor. There is also support for Dolby Vision, whereas the predecessor could only display HDR10+.

Motorola Edge 40 Pro price and availability

The Motorola Edge 40 Pro will be available in Europe starting at €899.99. Motorola says sales will start “in the coming days.” Also, although it isn’t yet confirmed, we expect the Motorola Edge 40 Pro to also land in the US later this year.
