Naga Munchetty, 47, has been having a series of deep discussions on her BBC Radio 5 Live show following a particular plot in Hollyoaks. However, while mediating a conversation between two callers, Naga was criticised for not letting one guest finish his point while giving airtime to the other.

Naga had been discussing the difficult topic on Tuesday amid the latest Hollyoaks episode which saw Nikki Sanderson’s character, Maxine, experience sexual harassment.

The conversation sparked a vast array of reactions, as women called in to share their own terrifying experiences, men questioned how they could better help women while some simply slammed the discussion saying they were bored of the topic.

One listener, Kevin, caused an explosive reaction as he texted into the show: “I feel very frustrated at the tone of the conversation.

“Not with regards the responsibility of employers but about the notion that women should not have to take some responsibility for their behaviour and to a degree as to what they wear depending on circumstance.”

The single parent of two daughters in their twenties added that he had prioritised teaching them “personal responsibility”.

Naga contacted Kevin towards the end of her show to have a telephone conversation in which he added he was “really pleased” his text had invoked such a reaction.

Another caller, Sarah, who slammed Kevin’s text as “archaic and pathetic” was also phoned into the show to have a balanced debate.

Using an allegory, Kevin said that if he was walking home at three in the morning carrying a laptop on his head and got mugged there wouldn’t be much sympathy for him as there is for women who have been sexually assaulted.

The caller added he was “sorry” if his text had come across as though he was blaming women but noted: “Now we seem to be in a culture where nobody has to take responsibility.”

Kevin also noted that he “didn’t realise the problem I was causing” simply by walking after dark until the Me Too movement and now “do whatever I can” to make the women around him feel safe.

He continued: “However, the problem we’ve got is the town I live in has got quite a strong east European population, we’ve had a lot come.

“It was a completely different attitude to women…”

DONT MISS:

At this point, Naga cut off the caller saying that she wanted “to stick to the general issues” rather than a problem “regarding a specific population”, but noted she would come back to that point but unfortunately ran out of airtime before she was able to.

Twitter user Chris was listening to Naga’s show and admitted that she had a “great program” but was irate that Kevin never got to finish his point.

Chris wrote: “Highly disappointed you didn’t let the gent who phoned in go back to his valid point about the different attitudes towards women from eastern European males!

“He was intelligent, and I’m sure he would have articulated it perfectly!!!”
