Netflix’s new game plan is to bring more and more games to stream, and around 40 new titles are prepared to be added this year. While Netflix is working on some of these titles in-house, the streaming giant has also teamed with studios such as Ubisoft and Super Evil Megacorp.
It seems like Netflix has not given up on its cloud gaming ambitions. The company’s VP of games, Mike Verdu, revealed in October that Netflix was “seriously looking into” a cloud gaming service, and the project is “in progress,” told Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s VP of external games.
Since its launch in 2021, Netflix has brought 55 titles to its subscribers, with 40 slated to arrive this year and 70 more in the early stages of development.
Out of these 40 titles, one is from Ubisoft, which arrives on Netflix’s three-title exclusive deal with the studio. The second title to arrive is a roguelite titled Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace, on April 18. The upcoming second game is based in the same universe as the first one, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot. However, it offers an enhanced formula, a more intricate storyline, and improved gameplay.
Later this year, Netflix will release the sequel to one of its most popular games, Too Hot to Handle: Love is a Game, based on the successful reality show Too Hot to Handle. Netflix credits the game’s frequent content updates for its high engagement and is partnering with Nanobit, the original game developer, for the sequel.
Coming in 2024 is the Monument Valley series to Netflix Games. The Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 will be available to Netflix subscribers starting next year.
Loombe says that the goal is to make Netflix games available on all Netflix-compatible devices. However, it is not as easy as it sounds. Apple still has strict guidelines for cloud gaming apps, including Netflix’s “The company is still figuring out how to bring streaming to app stores, and is actively working on a plan.” added Loombe.
