A new live-action Princess film is in the works at Walt Disney Studios, with the story having an Indian setting.

According to Deadline, Disney has asked two-time BAFTA nominee Gurinder Chadha to pen the script alongside her husband and longtime collaborator Paul Mayeda Berges, who wrote Bend it Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice and more, with the former.

While the report doesn’t feature any details about the story, the Disney original will be a musical feature “inspired by a dynamic princess from Indian history.”

With Chadha and Berges writing the script, the former will also be directing and producing the film alongside Sean Bailey, President of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production and Lindy Goldstein through her production banner.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Chadha shed more light on her process to write the script for the Disney original. “Let me tell you, it’s not easy writing a Disney princess movie,” she said. Chadha further stated, “It’s a very hard thing to do because there are certain rules you have to follow and you also don’t want to repeat yourself. I don’t want to make Mulan again for example, I want to do my own thing.”

The Bend it Like Beckham director revealed that she couldn’t say no, when Bailey approached her with the idea for an Indian Disney Princess movie, as she exclaimed about sharing more about the film soon.

“Together all of us are really shaping this story which, I hope once we’ve got to a good stage, we’re ready to share.”
