New foldable in town plus some Friday fun!

🌞 Happy Friday, folks! I’m usually super upbeat when the weekend comes around, but I’m currently nursing the flu. Think I’m going to stay in bed and hit up streaming services for some good content. If I feel better by Sunday, I plan to pop into the theater for John Wick: Chapter 4. My husband insists he’ll wear a suit for an early afternoon show. That should be fun. Anyhow, here’s what’s buzzing in tech news today.

It may not have the same glory as before, but HUAWEI is still dropping some seriously cool phones back East. Just yesterday, two new phones joined the company’s portfolio with a lot to brag about. The HUAWEI P60 and Mate X3 may not have Google services aboard, but there’s a lot to like here.

Everything but the kitchen sink: Meet the HUAWEI Mate X3

• Making a return to book-style foldables, the Mate X3 delivers a 7.85-inch 120Hz internal folding screen and another 120Hz 6.4-inch FHD+ curved front display.
• The Chinese brand has also worked on slimming down the device. It’s lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4.
• You’ve also got a so-called “feather sand glass” back that’s supposed to be resistant to fingerprint grease.
• One major design-related upgrade is the addition of an IPX8 rating — a rare feature in foldable phones.
• HUAWEI is also offering a wet hand mode, so the device will recognize your touch input with, you guessed it, wet hands.
• Core specs of the phone include the 4G Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip, 256GB to 1TB of expandable storage, a 4,800mAh battery, 66W wired charging, and 50W wireless charging.
•  There’s a chunky rear camera system consisting of a 50MP main camera with OIS (RYYB color filter), a 13MP ultrawide camera with macro support, and a 12MP 5X periscope camera.
• There’s no word on global availability just yet, but the Mate X3 starts at 12,999 yuan (~$1,904) in China.

• The P60 Pro is HUAWEI’s flagship candidate for 2023, even though it lacks 5G connectivity.
• If you don’t care about foldables (or Google services), this is the phone to look at.
• The design of the phone is unique thanks to a “condensed” mother-of-pearl back cover.
• You’ve got the so-called “feather sand glass” backs for the other color variants.
• The P series has always excelled when it comes to photography, and it looks like the P60 Pro is no different.
• It features a triple rear camera system, with a 48MP primary shooter that supports boasts variable aperture support and an RYYB color filter for improved low-light snaps.
• Next up is a 40MP 3.5X periscope shooter. HUAWEI promises great low-light results with this camera too, thanks to the use of an RYYB color filter and optical image stabilization.
• A 13MP ultrawide shooter rounds out this triple rear camera system, although you’ll also find a 13MP ultrawide shooter up front for selfies.
• Other specs are equally impressive, including a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 4G processor, a 6.67-inch LTPO 120Hz OLED screen, 256GB of expandable storage, a 4,815mAh battery, 88W wired charging, and 50W wireless charging.
• The P60 Pro starts at 6,988 yuan (~$1,023) for the base 256GB variant. There’s no word on global availability.

• Nutella, peanut butter, graham cracker, and strawberry frosting. Is your mouth watering yet? I’m salivating just looking at this 3D-printed futuristic dessert — a cheesecake.
• While 3D-printed food has been around for a while, a cheesecake is something we’ve not seen being cooked up by a machine from scratch.
• Researchers at Columbia University’s Creative Machines Lab printed and laser-cooked this seven-ingredient slice of cake.
• It’s made from edible “food inks” including peanut butter, Nutella, and strawberry jam.
• Imagine just walking to your kitchen one day and pressing a button to get some cheesecake! That’s a tasty-looking future to me.
