Nothing Phone (1) to come with a mid-range processor

0

After months of hype, Nothing’s boss Carl Pei confirmed the chipset inside the Nothing Phone (1). In an interview with InputMag, Pei confirmed that Nothing’s first smartphone will be powered by a two-year-old mid-tier chipset from Qualcomm – Snapdragon 778G+ SoC. The processor chosen by Nothing does not come as a surprise since rumours suggest that a mid-range chipset would power the Phone (1).
Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ will power the Nothing Phone (1)
The Snapdragon 778G+ is one of the most popular chipsets powering many mid-range Android smartphones in the last year or two, and it has proved to be a good enough option. But considering the hype surrounding the Nothing Phone (1), this could disappoint some, especially the person who paid $3,064 (~Rs 2,41,742.09) to have one of the first 100 units. Also, now we know that the Phone (1) will not be as powerful as the high-end Android smartphones regardless of how much Pei brags about it.
A little dive into Snapdragon 778G+ chipset
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G+ is a year-old chip announced in October 2021. It is an octa-core chip fabbed on TSMC’s 6nm process node and has the same configuration as the former, having four Cortex-A78 performance cores and four Cortex A-55 efficiency cores. The only difference between the Snapdragon 778G and Snapdragon 778G+ is the wireless charging and reverse charging support on the latter. Nothing said to InputMag that these features were exclusively made for the Nothing Phone (1).
Here’s what Nothing has to say on the Snapdragon 778G+ chipset
When asked why Nothing went with the Snapdragon 778G+ for its first smartphone, the company said it offers an optimum balance between performance and power efficiency. The company is surely right about it, but it would have been better if the Phone (1) came with a much newer Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset instead of a two-year-old chipset. But again, the chipset has been out there for quite a while with a good enough track record which could make people spend their money on it.
