NRL 2022, round two: South Sydney Rabbitohs irked at Melbourne Storm’s Brandon Smith after he appeared to mock Latrell Mitchell

South Sydney are reportedly angry with Brandon Smith after the Melbourne hooker appeared to mock Latrell Mitchell after the Storm’s one-point win over the Rabbitohs in round two.

In a conversation with teammate Cameron Munster after the tense 15-14 win, Smith was spotted putting his right hand to his right ear and pulling a funny face, pretending he couldn’t be heard.

That was in response to Mitchell performing the same action after nailing a field goal to send the match into golden point, with his gesture suggesting the Storm’s home crowd had been silenced by the visitors.

“He’s upset some people at South Sydney with antics after the game,” said Nine rugby league reporter Michael Chammas of Smith, who didn’t face the Rabbitohs due to a broken hand.

“Brandon Smith – he looks like he’s mocking Latrell there.

“Maybe some long memories of previous incidents while Latrell was playing with the Roosters.”

That remark from Chammas referred to a host of dramas involving Mitchell and the Storm in his four seasons with the Roosters between 2016 and 2019.

In round six of the 2019 season, Mitchell nailed a long-range field goal to clinch victory for the Roosters on the Storm’s home patch.

Mitchell also had several heated run-ins with former Melbourne firebrand Will Chambers, while the Roosters trumped the Storm in the 2019 NRL grand final.

“No love lost there between the Storm and Latrell Mitchell,” Chammas said.

The Storm and Rabbitohs will next meet in round 19.
