OnePlus 10 Pro: Everything you need to know

2022 is going to be a weird year for OnePlus. The company is now fully committed to “OnePlus 2.0,” which refers to its merging with sister brand Oppo. The OnePlus 10 Pro is now the first flagship phone to launch from the brand with that merger completed.

With that in mind, the launch of the 10 Pro is strange indeed, at least for OnePlus. The company announced the phone much earlier than usual in its native China. However, it hasn’t told us when it will launch anywhere else nor has it given us any information about the vanilla OnePlus 10 or any other phones in the 10 series.

Regardless, we’ve got all the official information on the OnePlus 10 Pro for you here. Be sure to bookmark this page because we will update it as OnePlus confirms future information about the phone.

OnePlus launched the OnePlus 10 Pro on January 11, 2022, in its native China. Buyers in China can grab the phone starting January 13. OnePlus did not disclose when the phone would be available in other countries. The company also did not launch the OnePlus 10; we assume this will come at a future date.

The OnePlus 10 Pro is expected to be the company’s top flagship of 2022. It has the best specs of any OnePlus phone to date, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, which is currently the most powerful processor in the Android world. It has up to 12GB of RAM, up to 256GB of internal storage, a huge 5,000mAh battery, and incredibly fast 80W wired charging.

The Chinese price of this phone is 4,699 yuan (~$737) for the base 8GB/128GB variant. It is unclear how this price will translate to the US, the UK, Europe, India, and other supported countries.

OnePlus has given us some of the specs for the 10 Pro. However, there are lots of things still missing. Regardless, everything we know for certain is in the table below. We will update the table when OnePlus officially fills in the blanks.

Last year, the camera on the OnePlus 9 Pro was the best we’d ever seen from the brand. This year, the company is changing up its strategy slightly.

In the 9 Pro, we saw a wide lens, ultrawide lens, telephoto lens, and a monochrome sensor. With the OnePlus 10 Pro, the company is abandoning the monochrome system and sticking with just the three main lenses.

As far as megapixels go, those sensors remain unchanged from the previous generation. That means we have a 48MP wide, 50MP ultrawide, and 8MP telephoto. There could be hardware differences for these lenses, but OnePlus hasn’t given out the info we need to make that determination.

There must be some hardware differences, however, because the ultrawide lens is now capable of a ludicrous 150-degree field-of-view (FoV). This incredibly wide FoV is close to fisheye lens territory since it warps the sides of the photo. Thankfully, by default, the camera shoots at a much more reasonable 110-degree FoV. You can reach that 150-degree limit in the camera app’s settings if you like.

Other features of note include support for 10-bit color capture and 12-bit RAW capture on all three lenses. Optical image stabilization is also available, although OnePlus wouldn’t tell us which lenses support it.

On the front, the OnePlus 10 Pro has a 32MP selfie shooter. This has twice the megapixels as the OnePlus 9 Pro’s front-facing camera.

Despite its high marks, the OnePlus 9 Pro actually had ho-hum battery life. The battery seemed to be a decent size but software optimization must have been holding it back some since we could only get 1.5 days out of it before needing a recharge.

Theoretically, the OnePlus 10 Pro could be better. First off, the battery itself is significantly larger: 5,000mAh, which is 11% larger than what we saw in the 9 Pro. Second, the chipset inside is reportedly more power-efficient than the Snapdragon 888, which we found in the OnePlus 9 Pro. Finally, OnePlus has purportedly tweaked its software to make its display more power-efficient as well. All this combined should make for better battery life.

However, until we can get our hands on the phone and run it through our testing suite, we can’t say much for certain. Stay tuned for our data.

Either way, the OnePlus 10 Pro is a charging monster. It can charge at a stunning 80W with its included charging brick and USB-C cable. That’s 15W faster than what we saw on the OnePlus 9 series. It also has the 50W wireless charging speed of the 2021 flagship (using OnePlus’ proprietary charging stand). Finally, it has reverse wireless charging, too. OnePlus says you can expect wired and wireless charging times of 32 and 47 minutes respectively.

Inside the OnePlus 10 Pro, you’ll find the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This is 2022’s flagship Android chipset. Although we haven’t yet seen the 2022 flagships from Google and Samsung, it is unlikely any company is going to steal Qualcomm’s crown this year. As such, we expect the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 to be the best of the best in Android for most or all of 2022.

When you combine this chipset with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, you have a performance beast. Although we haven’t tested it for ourselves yet, we see every reason to believe the OnePlus 10 Pro will cut through your smartphone tasks like a hot knife through butter. The phone starts at 8GB/128GB though, so you’ll need to pay a bit more for the 12GB variant.

One of the biggest (and most controversial) aspects of “OnePlus 2.0” is the changes made to the company’s Android skin, Oxygen OS. In late 2021, the company started merging Oxygen OS with Oppo’s Color OS, which resulted in some very significant problems.

In most areas of the world, the OnePlus 10 Pro ships with this version of Oxygen OS out-of-the-box. Oxygen OS 12, based on Android 12, will come to the US, the UK, Europe, India, and other supported countries. Meanwhile, buyers in China will find Color OS 12 on their OnePlus 10 Pro devices.

OnePlus promises its merger with Oppo and the merging of Color OS and Oxygen OS will result in faster, more stable updates. So far, though, we haven’t seen much improvement. We’ll give OnePlus the benefit of the doubt here since the merger happened only recently. However, the company has a lot of ground to make up when it comes to earning back user trust for software updates.

That all being said, OnePlus has promised three Android upgrades for the OnePlus 10 Pro plus an additional fourth year of security patches. That means the 10 Pro should see all the way up to Android 15.

As mentioned earlier, we are still missing quite a few specs and details related to the OnePlus 10 Pro. On paper, however, there don’t appear to be too many significant differences between it and the OnePlus 9 Pro. What we do know is wrapped up here:

• Design: The rear camera module of the 10 Pro is very different from the one on the 9 Pro. This gives the 10 Pro a distinctly different look. However, outside of this change, the phones are pretty similar.
• Performance: The 10 Pro has a newer, better chipset in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. However, the related performance specs — such as RAM and storage speeds — remain unchanged.
• Power: The OnePlus 10 Pro has a larger battery than the 9 Pro at 5,000mAh. It also charges faster at 80W wired. Wireless and reverse wireless charging speeds, though, are unchanged.
• Camera: The OnePlus 9 Pro has an extra rear sensor when compared to the 10 Pro. This monochrome sensor, though, isn’t too integral to photo/video quality. The 10 Pro has an ultrawide lens with a much wider FoV and also supports new high-end photo standards, including 10-bit color and 12-bit RAW. The selfie camera has a 32MP sensor, which is twice the megapixels of the 9 Pro’s 16MP sensor.

In China, the price of this phone is 4,699 yuan (~$737) for the 8GB/128GB variant, 4,999 yuan (~$785) for the 8GB/256GB model, and 5,299 yuan (~$832) for the 12GB/256GB variant. It is unlikely that price will be 1:1 with pricing in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and India. OnePlus tells us the phone will end up in those countries sometime later in 2022.

OnePlus has made no announcements as of yet related to the vanilla OnePlus 10.

Q: Does the OnePlus 10 Pro have an 80W charger in the box?
A: Yes, you’ll find a charger in the box with your purchase. There’s also a USB-C cable in there, so you won’t need to buy anything extra to see the 80W charging speeds.

Q: Does the phone have the usual OnePlus alert slider?
A: Yes, the hardware alert slider is in its usual spot on the right side of the phone. This hardware feature allows you to quickly set your phone to vibrate or silent.

Q: Is the OnePlus 10 Pro water- and dust-resistant?
A: OnePlus did not confirm this for us. However, the OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 9 Pro both had IP68 ratings, so it’s safe to assume the 10 Pro does, too.

Q: Is there a headphone jack or microSD card slot on the OnePlus 10 Pro?
A: No, the phone does not have either of these features.
