On Monday, OnePlus is finally launched its 2017 flagship smartphone called OnePLus 5. The key details and design of the smartphone are already revealed by several leaks and teasers. The latest Snapdragon 835 SoC is the biggest highlight of the phone infect it is the cheapest flagship equipped with 835 SoC.
OnePlus 5 design
Let’s talk about design aspect of the smartphone, the OnePlus 5 looks like iPhone 7 Plus. It sports an Anodized Aluminum unibody with curved Antennas on the top and bottom rear of the device. The company is boasting of the slimness of the OnePlus 5, calling it the “slimmest OnePlus flagship ever” at 7.25mm. It retains the dual speakers as well as the 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom panel. OnePlus 5 also has the notifications slider like the OnePlus 3, 3T smartphones. Users can set the phone to silent, do not disturb and ring profiles by using this slider. Beneath the display is the physical home button that comes with an integrated fingerprint sensor which is claim to unlock the phone is 0.2 seconds. The phone will be available in Midnight Black and Slate Grey color options.
OnePlus 5 specifications
Lets get into specifications, The OnePlus 5 runs OxygenOS based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. It sports a 5.5” full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) Optic AMOLED display supporting sRGB and DCI-P3 colour standards, and pixel density of 401 PPI and is protected by 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5. It also features the new Reading Mode which automatically detects the data from the display and adjust the display accordingly.
As mentioned earlier the smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship processor, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC with 10nm FinFET architecht. It has Adreno 540 GPU as well. The OnePlus 5 offers a massive 8GB of RAM.Till date, only the Asus ZenFone AR having 8GB RAM. The OnePlus 5 sports LPDDR4X RAM, which OnePlus claims is 17 percent more power efficient than the previous LPDDR4 offering. OnePlus is offering the smartphone in two memory and storage variants – 6GB RAM/ 64GB inbuilt storage and 8GB RAM/ 128GB inbuilt storage. Company is use of UFS 2.1 storage and a 2-lane ROM, which together are said to double bandwidth.
OnePlus 5 camera
Lets now talk about the camera which company is focusing a lot, The OnePlus 5 is claimed to sport what OnePlus calls the “highest resolution dual-camera system on a smartphone today”. OnePlus 5 sports a 16MP+20MP dual rear camera combination. This is made up of a 16MP main camera (Sony IMX398 sensor, 1.12-micron pixels) with an f/1.7 aperture, which can capture 34 percent more light than the OnePlus 3T (which had an aperture of f/2.0), coupled with a 20MP telephoto camera (Sony IMX350 sensor, 1-micron pixels) with an f/2.6 aperture. The combination of the two can let users take a ‘bokeh’ style image with background blurred, while the object is in sharp focus.
OnePlus 5 gets a portrait mode and offers 2X zoom capability as well. Users can also do up to 8X zoom using a multi-frame software algorithm. The rear camera setup also supports the new Pro Mode, with options like ISO, shutter-speed, white balance, a histogram, gyroscope-based reference line, and RAW image editing. OnePlus also announced an improved HDR algorithm, and brought forward its Smart Capture feature for auto adjustments. On the video front, OnePlus 5 can record up to 4K resolution, and comes with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) for stable videos. The noise-cancelling microphones also ensure better quality audio when recording video on OnePlus 5.
The company is also boasting of Fast AF, which gives the OnePlus 5 faster autofocus, said to be 40 percent speedier than the OnePlus 3T. The rear camera setup also features a dual-LED flash module
The front camera can also shoot full-HD (1080p) video and features activate screen flash with three modes to choose from – On, Off, and Auto. There’s also an Auto HDR mode.
It comes with dual SIM dual standby and supports 34 LTE bands. Connectivity options include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, GLONASS, 3.5mm Audio port, and USB 2.0 Type-C port. Sensors on board the OnePlus 5 include accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, and a proximity sensor.
OnePlus 5 is powered by a 3300 mAh battery with Dash Charging support . Company claims that half an hour’s charge from the Dash Charge is enough to ensure the new phone will last all day. OnePlus says that their software, hardware optimisations have ensured the phone will last 20 percent longer than the OnePlus 3T.
OnePlus 5 pricing and availability
OnePlus 5 price in the US starts from $479 (Rs. 31,000 Approx), and EUR 499 (Rs. 35,900 Approx) in select European regions. It has gone up for pre-orders in those regions right now, with an Early Drop system that will see shipments begin on Wednesday, June 21, a full six days ahead of general sales that begin on June 27. Early Drop pre-order buyers will get special launch offers as well. The Indian launch of the OnePlus 5 will be held on June 22nd, amazon has confirmed that sales of the smartphone will begin from 4:30pm IST on Thursday, June 22 itself.
