The Brisbane Broncos have been the story of the season so far with five wins from five matches this season, but club legend Darren Lockyer isn’t getting carried away.

Kevin Walters’ side has blown the doors of its opponents, with the 5-0 record coming with a monster point differential of +75 through the first five rounds.

However, Lockyer, the heart and soul of the Broncos for so many years, has urged the team to continue proceeding with caution.

“They do need to not get too far ahead of themselves and remind themselves (of) what happened late last year and that it can turn very quickly if you don’t have the right attitude week-in, week-out,” he told Wide World of Sports’ QLDER.

“Really good signs and there’s a lot of optimism in Brisbane at the moment, but we’re only five weeks into a marathon really.”

Lockyer believes an improved defence has allowed Walters’ side to thrive through the early part of the season.

“If you look at the scorelines in the last five weeks of last year, it was the defence (letting them down),” he said.

“That was the focus in the off-season and they’ve been doing that really well.

“With the addition of Reece Walsh, scoring points is not going to be an issue for the Broncos, it’s just stopping the opposition, and they’re doing that really well.”

Ever the optimist, Queensland great Wally Lewis believes the Broncos won’t be letting things get out of hand.

“I’m sure the Broncos have learnt from some mistakes before. They won’t get too carried away too soon,” he told QLDER.

“They’ll know that each game needs to be assessed and approached very carefully.

“The good thing is there’s no arrogance about their play whatsoever, they just take a look at the task at hand and they approach it quite capably.
