Payne Haas questions ban over Albert Kelly brawl

Broncos star Payne Haas has hit back at the one-match ban he copped for his part in a drunken brawl with teammate Albert Kelly, saying he didn’t deserve any ban at all.

Haas and Kelly were both handed bans by the NRL, with Haas hit with a $10,000 fine and Kelly docked $5000 for his part in the brawl.

However, after playing a starring role in the Broncos’ comeback win over the Bulldogs, Haas revealed his displeasure at the sanctions handed down to him by the league.

“I felt like I wasn’t worthy of getting suspended,” he told 9News Queensland.

“I felt like I didn’t do too much wrong, but obviously we’re in the public eye and I can’t be doing that kind of stuff. I’ve got to handle those kinds of situations a bit better.”

The incident was the latest in a string of off-field misdemeanours for Haas, who was on a good behaviour bond after verbally abusing a female police officer last year.

Haas’ current contract with Brisbane ties him to Red Hill until the end of 2024, when he will be earning about $800,000 a season.

The 22-year-old has played 66 games and scored six tries for the Broncos since making his debut for the club back in 2018.
