Many pensioners are reliant upon the state pension to help them out financially in later life. However, this is not the only support offered, and they could find they are missing out on additional help. This can come in the form of Pension Credit – designed to help hard-up pensioners with their living costs.
People must live in England, Scotland or Wales and have reached state pension age to qualify.
While separate from the state pension, the sum could greatly assist in boosting the amount older people on low income get.
Recently, the DWP has urged pensioners to consider applying for Pension Credit.
Research from Age UK showed some are unaware of the benefit, while others are hesitant about claiming a benefit.

“What this can do, is that it can top up your pension if your total weekly income is below £177 if single, or £270 for couples.
“Even if you earn more than that and have some savings, you might still be entitled to a small Pension Credit top-up.
“Now, the reason this is so important is that it is a gateway benefit.
“If you’re entitled to the core element of Pension Credit, then if you’re over 75 you get a free TV licence.
This can only be done, however, by those who have already applied for their state pension.
Alternatively, people can apply by phone, or have a friend or family member do so on their behalf.
The final option for applying for Pension Credit is by post, sending a claim to the Pension Service.
All individuals will need to do is print out and fill in the form, accessible online, or call the claim line to request a form.
Those who need additional help with filling out their application are encouraged to contact voluntary groups such as Age UK or Citizens Advice.
