Photo of Israeli airstrike in Gaza Strip shared as ‘Russia-Ukraine conflict’

An image of two explosions in a city has been linked to the ongoing Russian military operations in Ukraine. Several social media accounts have posted this image, including the verified Facebook page ‘Record TV Kenya‘.

Using the social media monitoring tool, CrowdTangle, we found several Facebook accounts have posted the image. The post by ‘meme Nepal’ gained over 11,000 likes.


Many on Twitter has shared the same image.


Image from Gaza shared as Ukraine

Alt News performed a reverse image search and found that the image is from an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in May 2021. As per Getty Images, photographer Mahmud Hams took this picture.

The image’s caption reads, “A picture shows Israeli air strikes in the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, on May 10, 2021. – Israel launched deadly air strikes on Gaza in response to a barrage of rockets fired by the Islamist movement Hamas amid spiralling violence sparked by unrest at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.”
