Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a will get 5G support in India ‘at the earliest’: Google

Google unveiled Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones. Airtel is already offering 5G services in eight cities and Reliance Jio says it will launch the next-generation network on Diwali. OEMs such as Oppo, Realme, Samsung and Vivo, among others have already announced support for 5G network on their 5G-enabled phones. Google has now confirmed that it is working with carriers to roll out support to its devices in India soon.

In a statement to Gadgets Now, Google said that it is working with Indian carriers to enable 5G functionality. “[Google] Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6a are 5G-capable devices. We are actively working with the Indian carriers to enable functionality at the earliest,” Google said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a report by The Economic Times cited people familiar with the matter as saying that “Apple is currently testing their devices in cities like Mumbai and Delhi on Airtel’s 5G network, and may roll out the update supporting 5G to supported iPhone models by December.”

As per the Airtel website, Apple is yet to update software for all models launched after iPhone 12 series in India. Currently, Pixel 6a is the only smartphone from Google that is listed on the Airtel website to get the 5G update.
Government to prioritise 5G push
The development comes at a time when a report by Reuters suggests that top bureaucrats from telecom and IT departments will have a meeting on Wednesday to push smartphone makers, including Apple, Samsung, Vivo and Xiaomi, for early 5G adoption. Representatives from Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea will also be present at the meeting, the report said.
