Google’s Pixel 8 series is still months away from launch, but details are constantly trickling out about the new features coming to the phones. The latest insight comes from 9to5Google, which has managed to unearth a new photography feature headed for the Pixel 8 Pro.
The reveal comes courtesy of some code sleuthing of the latest Google Camera app update. The app’s code includes details of the new camera feature that could bring welcome improvements to Night Sight on the top-tier Pixel flagship by blending shots from multiple cameras.
The Pixel 7 Pro already uses this trick when taking zoomed-in shots. It’s called Multi-camera Super Res Zoom. The feature kicks in when you’re zooming, but not far enough to switch to the dedicated telephoto shooter. It combines images taken from both the primary camera and the telephoto lens to enhance the center of the resulting image, giving it more clarity and detail.
9to5Google explains Google could use the same formula on Night Sight images shot with the Pixel 8 Pro. The technique should remain the same, with the main and telephoto cameras on the upcoming phone shooting the same image over an extended period of time.
Since the regular Pixel 8 may not get a dedicated telephoto shooter, the feature should be exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro. Nevertheless, it’ll be interesting to see how well the Pixel 8 Pro camera and Google’s AI tech fares in these long exposure shots compared to those captured in ample light.
