Google CEO has recently confirmed that the I/O 2023 event will be held on May 10. The tech giant will showcase its software-related innovations at the company’s annual developer conference. Apart from this, Google is also expected to tease some of its upcoming hardware at the event. The company is rumoured to showcase the forthcoming Pixel 7a smartphone, the much-anticipated Pixel Fold smartphone and may also share the pricing details of the Pixel Tablet which was teased last year. The tech giant is expected to launch the Pixel 7a smartphone a few months later after the I/O event. However, the latest leaks reveal new details about the mid-range smartphone. According to a report by the Vietnamese publication Zing News (spotted by 9to5Google), Google’s next budget phone will include a RAM upgrade and some fundamental design changes.
Google Pixel 7a: Expected release date
To compare, Google announced the Pixel 6a at last year’s Google I/O held in May 2022. The company then launched the mid-range smartphone in July 2022. Google may follow a similar schedule with this year’s Pixel 7a. However, the company has mentioned anything official regarding the smartphone’s launch.
Google Pixel 7a: Expected design and specs
Earlier, Pixel 7a’s design has been revealed by leaked renders. But, the latest report offers a closer look at the smartphone by showing off the Pixel 7a’s hardware in detailed photos.
As per the report, the back panel of the upcoming smartphone looks very similar to the vanilla Pixel 7 model. To compare, Pixel 6a had a complete glass camera module, while the Pixel 7a is expected to feature the same updated camera bar as the Pixel 7 series. However, the front panel of the smartphone is said to sport the same thicker bezels seen on last year’s phone.

The report also claims that the Pixel 7a is likely to arrive with a single SIM slot, USB-C charging, and SIM tray-related waterproofing. The phone is expected to pack 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM (Pixel 6a had 6GB of RAM). Traditionally, Google offers only one storage option on its A-series devices.
The report also mentions that the smartphone may have a 90Hz display and a 12MP dual rear camera setup. Apart from this, the smartphone is rumoured to come powered by the Tensor G2 chipset and support 5W wireless charging.
