Ash Ketchum and Pikachu’s journey will soon meet its conclusion, as Pokemon moves to a different direction with new characters.

In a recent interview with Animedia magazime (translated by Serebii user Dephender), Pokemon executive director Kunihiko Yuyama talked about the origins of the duo around 25 years ago. “I decided from the very get-go that the Pokemon that would become Satoshi’s (Ash’s name in Japan) partner would not be one of the three you choose between at the start of the video game, since I figured that might make some of the viewers sad,” said Yuyama. “That’s why he ended up with a Pikachu, a decision I’m really glad I made.”

The Pokemon director also spoke on the kind of communication the two have had over the years, as they don’t rely on words. “I’ve wanted to get across the sense that they communicate using nothing but gestures and noises as much as I could,” revealed Yuyama.

New species of cockroach named after Pokemon

Researchers in Singapore have named a cockroach after a seventh gen Pokemon.

According to The Straits Times, the species in question has named Phermosa, a Bug/Fighting type Pokemon, due to the various similarities it has to the cockroach. Entomologist Foo Maosheng have officially named the species Nocticola pheromosa.

“There are some similarities between Pheromosa and the delicate cockroach that we found, such as having a long antenna, wings that mimic a hood and long slender legs,” said Maosheng. “Both my collaborator and I are Pokemon fans, so we thought, why not name it after a Pokemon inspired by a cockroach.”
