Poland’s Iga Swiatek clinches No.1 ranking

Poland’s Iga Swiatek clinched becoming the new World No.1 in women’s tennis on Friday by defeating Swiss player Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-0 at the WTA Miami Open.

Swiatek will move into the top spot vacated by Australian Ashleigh Barty after the three-time Grand Slam champion announced her retirement earlier this week. “Pretty surreal,” Swiatek said.

Meanwhile, Nick Kyrgios took just 52 minutes to blitz World No.7 Andrey Rublev and move into the third round of the Miami Open on Friday. The controversial Australian’s aggression came to the fore as he wasted little time in racing to a 6-3, 6-0 win to set up a clash with fellow firebrand Fabio Fognini of Italy.
