Across Europe, the daughters of royals often wear tiaras for formal state occasions when they reach adulthood. Catharina-Amalia, Princess of Orange and future Queen of the Netherlands, opted for a star diadem from the royal collection for her tiara debut earlier this year.

A celebration was held in Oslo for the future Norwegian Queen, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, to mark her 18th birthday in June 2022.

Royals from around Europe attended the event, including King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and their eldest child Princess Catharina-Amalia.

A sweet picture was taken on the occasion of Ingrid, Catharina-Amalia, Princess Estelle of Sweden, Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant and Prince Charles of Luxembourg.

As she celebrated her milestone birthday, Princess Ingrid wore her first tiara – the Boucheron Circlet Pearl Tiara.

Since then, the Dutch Star Tiara has become closely associated with Maxima, making it all the more special that Catharina-Amalia chose it for her first tiara outing.

Maxima has previously worn the diadem to the wedding of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in 2004.

The tiara has also been worn on occasion by Catharina-Amalia’s grandmother Princess Beatrix, who was Queen of the Netherlands until she abdicated in 2013.

For her investiture as Queen following the abdication of her mother, Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix wore the diadem but with pearl buttons rather than stars.

Fittingly for a Princess, Catharina-Amalia has previously explained how she has adored tiaras since she was little.

In the biography ‘Amalia’, she said: “I love tiaras. Show me a tiara, and I’ll know where it came from.

“I can recognise all the tiaras of Europe. I used to put them on from my mother.

“Then there would be one on her make-up table, and I would have it directly on my head.”

A picture of Amalia wearing a tiara at the age of eight was published to coincide with the Princess’ 18th birthday last year.

As the granddaughter of King Charles and the daughter of the heir to the throne, Princess Charlotte of Wales is likely to wear a tiara when she turns 18.

The late Queen’s sister and daughter, Princess Margaret and Princess Anne, both wore tiaras before they were married, often opting for the Cartier Halo Tiara in their earlier years.

For women who marry into the Royal Family, they usually only wear tiaras on their wedding day and thereafter.
