PlayStation Japan teases on Twitter possible PS1 PS2 PS3 Backwards Compatibility announcement

The tweet from PlayStation_Jp reads: “#Kenshi Yonezu x #PlayStation. Kenshi Yonezu worked on a new ad for PlayStation. 1-2-3 is PlayStation’s icon. Booting on January 23”.

A short video is included in the tweet. The four PlayStation DualShock controller buttons appear, followed by the name Kenshi Yonezu in kanji, and lastly, the date January 23 is displayed. Note that this date is also written “123”. This could be another sign that PS1, PS2, and PS3 backward compatibility is coming to PS5.

Who is Kenshi Yonezu, the singer for the new January 23 PlayStation ad?

Kenshi Yonezu is a famous singer and music producer in Japan. Fans of Hatsune Miku and Vocaloid know Kenshi Yonezu as Vocaloid producer Hachi.

Yonezu started his career in 2009 by uploading Vocaloid music on Niconico, Japan’s YouTube. He’s the composer of famous Hatsune Miku songs such as Persona Alice and The World End Umbrella. In 2012, Hachi started singing using his own voice and name and is now one of the most popular singers in Japan.

Moreover, Yonezu is a full-fledged artist and illustrator, and owns his own brand, which is called “Reissue“. Further hinting that something related to the retro PlayStation consoles might be announced in the ad featuring Kenshi Yonezu music.

The Reissue Twiter account also shared the same tweet as PlayStation_Jp, and confirmed that Kenshi Yonezu made a new song for the ad.

New PlayStation ad revealed to random players, with no retro compatibility announcement in sight for now (Update)

As soon as clocks hit January 23 midnight in Japan, PlayStation Japan on its blog explained that the Kenshi Yonezu commercial with a new track, Pop Song, will be launching in January 24, but randomly selected players are able to watch the ad now via their PS4 and PS5. Random players with a Japanese PSN account received a notification “123 Early Access”, with a link to the ad.

Japanese game commercials usually come in 15 and 30 seconds versions, Right now, the 30 seconds version of the commercial is unlisted on YouTube. There is still hope PlayStation announces something alongside the ad’s public reveal on Monday January 24, but it looks like this was a false alarm for now.
