Backwards compatibility for the PS5 has been the talk of the town recently, with speculation continuing as PS3 trophies briefly replaced everyone’s PS4 achievements yesterday.
Ever since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard last week, PlayStation fans have been expecting a big announcement from Sony to show they’re still very much in the competition, with PS5 backwards compatibility being the most requested feature from players.

PS3 Logo Briefly Replaces PS4 Trophies
For a brief period late last night, many PlayStation users discovered that their PS4 trophies had completely disappeared, with some even seeing the PS3 logo in their place.
The issue was appearing on both consoles and the PlayStation Mobile App and has not been commented on by Sony, but has since been resolved. Although this could have quite simply been a random glitch, it has sparked further speculation that a backwards compatibility update is in the works.
Rumours first began when a new PlayStation patent titled “Backward Compatibility Through Use Of Spoof Clock And Fine Grain Frequency Control” was discovered. Followed by a bug causing various PS3 titles to appear on the PlayStation 5 store with a price, as opposed to redirecting players to PS Now.

It’s highly likely that this recent PS3 trophies issue was merely a glitch, but many are hopeful that it means PlayStation are in the process of developing backwards compatibility update for the PS5.
A System Software Update for the PS5 is also expected by the end of this month, as a new promotional video for Sony’s BRAVIA TV’s states that “Software updates on both PlayStation 5 consoles and BRAVIA are required, and will be available by the end of January 2022”. It’s possible that the new firmware update could unlock backwards compatibility, but we wouldn’t advise getting your hopes up.
