Qualcomm testing its answer to Apple’s M-series chips

0

Qualcomm has been desperate to bring an ARM-based chip for Windows PCs to compete with Apple‘s M-series chips. Earlier this year, the chipmaker announced a new brand, “Oryon,” a lineup of new CPUs meant for more powerful devices, made by Nuvia, a team of ex-Apple chip designers Qualcomm acquired last year, who happened to work on the M-series chip.
Now, Winfuture.de reveals some new information about Qualcomm’s upcoming ARM chip for PCs, codenamed “hamosa.” The report reiterates that the “hamosa” would come with 12 cores, four being low-power efficiency and eight high-performance cores. However, the clock speeds of these cores are unknown as of now.
Two “Oryon” chips under testing
As per the report, two versions of “hamosa” are being tested, with internal model numbers – SC8380X and SC8380XP. The model numbers suggest that these two would succeed the Snapdragon 8Cx Gen 3, which has an internal model number SC8280. This might imply that Qualcomm would market the upcoming chips as Snapdragon 8Cx Gen 4, but these chips would most probably come under the “Oryon” branding.
Qualcomm’s next desktop chip would support 5G
The report says that the tested platform has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X65 5G modem integrated, suggesting that the chips would come with support for 5G networks. However, it is unknown whether both chips would support 5G or only one variant.
Since the X65 modem is fabbed on the 4nm process, the upcoming chips could also be built on the 4nm node. The report adds that Qualcomm would partner with TSMC to manufacture the forthcoming chips, as the current samples are also made in Taiwan, the home of TSMC plants.
The report says that the new desktop chips of Qualcomm could support UFS 4.0 standard for internal storage, which would result in a performance boost. Further, the chips could also support LPDDR5X RAM.
Based on the announcement this November, Qualcomm plans to introduce Oryon CPUs sometime in 2023.
