Rafael Nadal has admitted it “means a lot” to be congratulated by arch rival Roger Federer following his triumph at the Australian Open on Sunday. The Spaniard became the most successful men’s player of all-time after defeating Daniil Medvedev in the Melbourne final to secure a record 21st Grand Slam title.

In the aftermath of the epic encounter, Federer took to social media to pay tribute to Nadal’s achievement.

“What a match!” Federer wrote on Instagram.

“To my friend and great rival, Rafael Nadal, heartfelt congratulations on becoming the first man to win 21 Grand Slam singles titles.

“A few months ago we were joking about both being on crutches. Amazing. Never underestimate a great champion.

“Your incredible work ethic, education and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world.

“It means a lot to me,” Nadal said after reading Federer’s words. “We have an amazing relationship – we did amazing things together. For me it’s a great honour to be part of his era.

“Together we have enjoyed and lived amazing moments of the history of our sport. To receive a message like this from him means a lot to me.

“I wish him well, he knows, and I really hope that we will be able to play again in important stages.”

Nadal produced a stunning comeback to claim the title Down Under.

The 35-year-old found himself two sets down in the final after struggling to cope with Medvedev in the early stages of the contest.

But he rallied to win the next three sets and make history against the odds.

Nadal had been battling with a foot injury ahead of the tournament and was forced to miss six months of action last year.

And the veteran has admitted he will now see how his body recovers before deciding when to get back out on the court.

“I have my schedule planned but I’m enjoying the moment,” Nadal added. “I need to see how my body recovers from an amazing month and I’m going to make my decision.”
