Reliance Digital Cancelling PS5 India Pre-Orders Seemingly At Random

PlayStation 5 pre-orders went up this week in the lead up to the PS5 India release date of February 2, 2021. With stores selling out within mere minutes, it turns out one retailer may have overestimated its PS5 quantity. Multiple readers of IGN India informed us their PS5 pre-orders placed via Reliance Digital have been cancelled. IGN India has been able to verify these claims and can confirm that the information is accurate.

Those who pre-ordered the PS5 via Reliance Digital’s site received emails stating that their orders were confirmed. Late last night however, they were notified that their PS5 pre-orders were cancelled. We reached out to Reliance Digital for comment before publishing and will update this story if we hear from the company.

What’s more is, it appears to be impacting a substantial number of online orders and cancellations appear to be done at random.

“I was on call with Reliance Digital customer care for one hour today when they told me my PS5 pre-order was randomly cancelled by their system,” says Bengaluru-based Vaibhav Davar whose Reliance Digital order was canceled yesterday after receiving a confirmation email on paying for a PS5. “I was told they were overbooked and it was not a manual cancelation from their side as customer care does not have control over their system. Basically they are overbooking pre-orders and taking a random lucky draw. Who does that in nation-wide launch pre-orders? I thought I will be getting my first console ever, now I am just disappointed.”

Davar’s experience checks out with what Twitter users have previously reported, that the company seems to be resorting to a lucky draw to decide who gets a PS5 after taking customer payments.

Cancellations aren’t just restricted to online orders either with multiple reports of offline orders being scrapped to the point where customers were turned away after being told they could buy one.

“I was told that had four units allotted to them and I was the first offline customer,” says one prospective PS5 buyer who requested anonymity. “By the time it hit 12 on the clock their allocation suddenly changed to two and I wasn’t even on the list.”

This happened with Xbox Series X pre-orders at Reliance Digital at well. At the time it was suggested that the retailer took pre-orders in excess of the stock that was allotted to it. With the PS5, history seems to have repeated itself. That too, after it was discovered that the company’s PS5 pre-registration survey leaked personal data of prospective customers.

Earlier this week Sony confirmed to us that a second pre-order phase is on the way.

“PS5 has met with unprecedented enthusiasm by PlayStation fans in India, resulting in a stockout during the pre-order period,” said a spokesperson for Sony to IGN India via email. “Keeping the current situation in mind, we kindly urge all customers to keep their health and safety first and refrain from visiting any retail store to pre-order a PS5. Please stay in touch with retailers for the next pre-order phase.”

While no date has been given as to when PS5 India pre-orders would open again, you can try your luck using a Telegram bot that notifies you when the console is available for pre-order on sites like Amazon.

Sources in the supply chain speaking to IGN India state that the PS5 India launch quantity is in the range of 4,000 to 5,000 units at best. This puts it squarely in line with the PS4’s launch quantity of 4,500 in 2014.

And while Sony has not said how many PS5s would be available in India at launch those familiar with the company’s plans tell us 12,000 to 15,000 units would have been ideal for an all-India launch across all cities.

It’ll be interesting to see how many PS5s will actually reach genuine buyers and not scalpers what with the likes of OLX already listing consoles at marked up prices.

Previously, Sony has urged prospective PS5 buyers in India to “keep their health and safety” in mind before venturing out to pre-order a PS5 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“PS5 will be available for pre-order on various online and offline channels (until stock lasts at respective retailer) such as Amazon, Flipkart, Croma , Reliance Digital, Games The Shop, Shop at Sony Center, Vijay Sales and select other authorized retailers taking pre-orders,” a spokesperson for Sony told us over email.

“Keeping the current situation in mind, Sony India urges all customers to keep their health and safety in mind before physically visiting any store for pre-order and advise them to call the local retailer before visiting. For contact details and address of the local retailers taking pre-orders, customers can also call our toll-free number 1800-103-7799.”
