Apex Legends is one of the most talked about games out there today and with the addition of the mobile variant of the title, the game has received even more popularity. It is a live-service title; therefore, the developers have to continuously work on the game to provide more content, work on bugs and glitches and also work on overall quality of life. Respawn has just released a matchmaking update for Apex Legends, which works towards making the game more fair.

Details about Apex Legends’ matchmaking update

The matchmaking update’s details were brought to the players by Samy Duc, Technical Director at Respawn. He has informed the players about various topics such as “What is Matchmaking”, “What approach does Apex Legends use”, “The future of Apex Legends Matchmaking” as well as answered some FAQs.

For what matchmaking is, he spoke of the three main buckets for this feature, Progression, Skill Rating and Matching. Progression is something that can be seen by the players, and therefore they are matched with other players that have made a similar kind of progress in the game.

Skill Rating is not visible to the players, this was done intentionally to avoid exploitation. They have distributed skills in two ways, Continuous Gaussian distribution and discrete buckets. Then for matching, the developers have created an algorithm that is responsible for determining which players get to enter the game.

How Apex Legends does matchmaking

So, the way Apex Legends does matchmaking is by using the Highest rated players for Pubs and Ranked matches. This is done to offer protection against exploits with new players and smurfs, as well as protecting the integrity of the game. This makes it difficult for higher ranked players to get in lower ranked matches. Therefore, they can not boost ahead.

However, they have also stated “it is very difficult and unlikely to get 60 players of similar skill and of equal premade sizes into a match”. Therefore, they have found a solution by adding a new algorithm, which is better at “compensating for the competitive advantage that premade duos and trios have”. This new system also learns and updates and is expected to arrive globally by early 2023. Players can learn more about the future of Apex Legends matchmaking here.
