Pension schemes can invest in listed shares and securities, but cannot normally directly invest in unlisted shares or residential property. 

However, they can invest in commercial property, and business owners will look at using their pension pot to fund the purchase of a property for their business to occupy.

Mr Latimer said: “This is a very tax-efficient way of extracting money from a private company, and the rental income in the pension, and any gains on the property disposal, can be received tax-free and reinvested.

“If the pension trustees cannot afford to buy the whole property from existing funds, they can borrow up to 50 percent of the value of the pension to invest.”
