Royal Family ‘travel protocols’ – items to ‘compulsorily pack’ to ‘honour local history’ | Travel News | Travel

In November 2021 Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall embarked on a tour of the Middle East, focusing on Jordan and Egypt. Also, earlier this month Sophie, Countess of Wessex visited Qatar where she visited their Fund For Development, after they delivered millions of eye tests and treatments across India and Bangladesh. With these small royal visits abroad beginning to happen again as coronavirus restrictions are beginning to ease, royal fans will be hopeful that this new year will see more tours on a larger scale.

But what rules must the royals follow when they travel to a foreign country?

Daena Borrowman, Marketing Manager at jewellerybox, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the rules in question.

She said: “The Queen normally favours bold colours and prescribes them to her family because royals are meant to be easily distinguishable in a crowd.

“However, a tragedy delivered a life lesson, giving rise to a whole new travel protocol that applies to this date.

“When Queen Elizabeth’s flight landed in England on the death of her father, her dresser realised they hadn’t packed a black mourning outfit for the new mourning Queen to be received by her ministers in.

“Ever since then, Royal Family members have to compulsorily pack a black outfit when travelling.”

What else must the royals keep in mind when travelling?

Daena continued: “Whilst touring abroad, royal protocol dictates that royal women also honour local history and traditions by sporting the colours of the country they are in.

DON’T MISS:

“They must wear jewellery gifted to the Queen by that country or respecting local customs such as covering of the head with a scarf.”

Another morbid but necessary rule of traveling also revolves around the potential for the worst to happen.

Royal heirs to the throne must reportedly travel separately, just in case something happens to one of their parents in transit.

This way, there will still be someone alive in the line of succession to take the throne.

“All other members of the Royal Family, including The Prince of Wales, have passports.”

Though fans will see the royals travel privately from time to time, they’re also permitted to fly commercial.

When they take a commercial flight, it’s reportedly recommended they use British Airways to support the UK economy.

It is an easy way for them to show solidarity with a business from their own country.
