Sam Raimi, who directed the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, has shared his feelings on the newest Spidey film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. After all, his iconic take on the Spider-Man villain Doc Ock and Green Goblin are both in the new multiverse film.

Speaking to Variety, Raimi said it was a blast to see some classic Spidey villains return to the big screen. “It was so much fun,” Raimi said.

Spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home Below.

“I love ‘No Way Home’ and the audience I was with went crazy. It was delightful to watch Alfred [Molina] play his role, and Willem Dafoe, just seeing these guys take it to the next level. And Tobey was awesome as always. The best word I can say is it was refreshing for me.”

Dafoe returns in No Way Home as the Green Goblin from Raimi’s first Spider-Man film, while Molina played the villainous Doctor Otto Octavius in Spider-Man 2. Not content with just the two, Thomas Haden Church also appeared in the movie as Sandman from Spider-Man 3.

And of course, the biggest reveal of the movie is how Tobey Maguire from Spider-Man and Andrew Garfield from The Amazing Spider-Man both traveled across the multiverse to fight alongside Tom Holland.

No Way Home is still dominating at the box office, over a month after its debut. This past weekend, it retook the top spot at the domestic weekend box office, bringing in over $14 million. No Way Home has now earned over $1.69 billion worldwide, with $721 million coming from North America.

Raimi also gave a quick update on his next Marvel movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Last November, we learned that the movie was undergoing significant reshoots, but now Raimi says they’re just about finished.

“I think we’re done, but we just cut everything,” Raimi said. “We’re just starting to test the picture and we’ll find out if there’s anything that’s got to be picked up.”
