Samsung Galaxy S23 series: How the company may make this biggest-yet change in its most-powerful phones of 2023

0

Samsung has been launching its flagship Galaxy S series smartphones with two different chipsets depending upon the region – the company’s own Exynos SoC and Qualcomm’s flagship processor of that time. This has been the case almost since the series made its debut in the year 2010. The latest Galaxy S series phones, Samsung Galaxy S22 series were launched earlier this year with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Exynos 2200 chipsets. In fact, this is the first time that the flagship series models with the Qualcomm chipset launched in India, and not with Exynos.
However, it seems that this may change in 2023. Reports suggest that the company is planning to ditch its in-house Exynos chip for the Galaxy S23 lineup. According to the popular analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities, Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S23 series smartphones only with Qualcomm’s chipset across the globe and may give the Exynos chipset a miss entirely for the lineup. This means that there will be no Exynos-powered Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ or Galaxy S23 Ultra phones.
Why Samsung may not go in-house for the chipset
According to Kuo, the reason is the better performance from the upcoming flagship chip from Qualcomm — likely to be called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 — compared to the Exynos counterpart. The analyst has claimed that the Exynos 2300 “can’t compete” with Qualcomm’s flagship in terms of performance.
Kuo also forecasts that Qualcomm’s market share will go up in the high-end Android space with the launch of the Snapdragon Gen 2 chipset. According to Kuo, the handset will be equipped with the chipset with part number SM8550 and it will be built using TSMC’s 4nm process.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, as per the reports, is likely to offer better performance and improved power efficiency compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. Meanwhile, Samsung Mobile president TM Roh confirmed in April that the company is working on a ‘unique’ chip for Galaxy smartphones. Although, it is still unclear whether it will be a part of the Exynos lineup or the company is planning to launch a new customised chipset for its flagship phones.
