Samsung is developing the next-gen Google Tensor, Exynos chipsets

Google introduced its proprietary Tensor chipset with the Pixel 6 series and the company has since been improving the new processor for the next generation of Pixel devices. The tech giant is expected to unveil the Tensor 2 silicon with the Pixel 7 series which is likely to launch in October.
According to a report by 9to5Google, the third generation of Tensor chipsets are also under development at Samsung. The South Korea-based tech giant is currently early testing and developing the third-generation Tensor processors with Google.
As per the report, Google is testing the third generation of Tensor with the development board codenamed “Ripcurrent.” Previously, the Tensor 2 chip was reported of being developed under the codename “Cloudripper”.
The report mentions that the third-gen Tensor chip carries the model number S5P9865, which also matches the pattern of previous Tensor chips. The first Tensor chip had the model number S5P9845, and Tensor 2 is expected to be S5P9855, the report adds. Another report by GizmoChina states that Samsung is also developing its Exynos 1380 chips along with the Google ones.
Samsung reportedly developing Exynos 1380 chipset
The rumoured Exynos 1380 chipset is expected to succeed the Exynos 1280 processor which was introduced in April 2021. The report claims that the Exynos 1380 chipset is being developed and tested under the product codename S5E8835.
The Samsung Galaxy A53 smartphone features the Exynos 1280 mobile platform, so its successor is expected to power the Samsung Galaxy A54. However, Samsung has not confirmed any details about the development of the new chipsets.
The Google-Samsung partnership continues
The report notes that the original Tensor chip was based on the 5nm node process of Samsung’s Exynos chips. The similarities can be discovered by looking deeper look into the Google chip, the report claims. The third generation of Google Tensor is likely to be introduced with the Pixel 8 series in 2023, the report adds
According to the report, Samsung is one of the few options Google currently has for its Tensor chips. However, if the company partners with other chipmakers like MediaTek and Qualcomm the company can find out how far the processors can stretch, the report suggests.
The connectivity performance of the first Tensor chip couldn’t match the levels of Qualcomm’s latest chipset — the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 mobile platform. Moreover, the Google chip also faced some heating issues and lacked efficiency as well.
The report suggests that the third generation of the Tensor chip will hopefully close the gaps and is expected to offer a similar experience as the Snapdragon platforms.
