Shakira’s football star ex Gerard Pique, who shares two sons with the Hips Don’t Lie songstress, has spoken out about his need to protect his children following the love split, while also remaining faithful to his own needs. The 36-year-old has vowed to “keep doing what I want”, adding that he is “very happy” with his new partner.

Gerard had been totally silent for nine months after the news broke that he and Shakira, 46, had called it quits.

Now, the retired sports star has come forward for an interview with Spanish language newspaper El Pais – and, to the delight of fans, he wasn’t shy about discussing his family.

“Everyone has their responsibility to try to do what is best for their children – it’s about protecting them,” he explained.

“That is the job of all parents with children. That is what I am focused on and that is my job as a father.”

Gerard spent more than ten years with Shakira, during which she gave birth to 10-year-old Milan and eight-year-old Sasha.

However, he now insists he wants to spend his energy on being with his “loved ones” and “giving them what I have”, following the major “changes” in his life.

He also feels unapologetic about his new relationship, with the glamorous Clara Chia Marti.

The 24-year-old had previously worked as a special events supervisor at his TV and movie production company, Kosmos, according to reports published in Newsweek, before they met.

The Barcelona based PR student keeps her Instagram account under lock and key, so not much is known about the mysterious lady who has captured Gerard’s heart.

However, he defiantly insisted in his latest interview that the choices he makes in his love life are all about being “faithful” to his own desires.

“I keep doing what I want. The day I die, I will look back and hope I have always done what I wanted,” he declared.

“I want to be faithful to myself. I’m not going to spend money cleaning up my image.”

He added that he is interested in preserving his own happiness, concluding: “The people that I love and care about are the ones who know me. The rest isn’t important to me.”

Meanwhile, Shakira has admitted she’s had a “rough year” following the split, but told the Tonight Show that her music is the perfect way to constructively “channel my emotions”.
