Deborah James has updated her fans on Instagram with a video post on Sunday, as she took her first few steps since undergoing three operations due to an “acute medical emergency”. The former deputy headteacher, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in December 2016, left her followers worried after the campaigner revealed “nearly died” last week.

And in her latest Instagram post, the 40-year-old shared a health update as she geared up for “a lot more procedures” to come.

“Today I walked – it’s the first time in 9 days I’ve been able to try,” she wrote in view of her 273,000 followers.

“It’s never been so hard to muster the strength and conviction to do so.

“I’ve had four operations this week (with more to come), am beyond shattered with a very weak body.”

The BBC podcast presenter went on to say that her latest stint in the hospital has undoubtedly been her most challenging yet.

Still, she thanked the nurses and doctors for not only saving her life but for providing her with moral support as she continued to fight the disease, which has plagued her life for over five years.

Deborah stressed that she wasn’t sure how things would move forward as she awaited her next operation, but she’s made tremendous progress from how poorly she felt just a week ago.

“I’m making progress, it’s slow but steady. I’m still being monitored very closely,” the mother-of-two continued.

It was the same month the F*** You Cancer author celebrated her five-year milestone since her diagnosis, where she was told she might not make it beyond five years.

The surgery was performed after doctors uncovered that Deborah had developed an “aggressive” tumour next to her liver over the summer.

“It hasn’t really sunk in because I’ve had my head down the loo for the last three days due to chemo and been asleep minus the fleeting windows of prancing you might see!” she said, in an Instagram post last month.

“But cheers to the blessing of another day, another chance, more options, and more life I didn’t think I’d see! One day at a time!”
