Yes, that actually was Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, says director David F. Sandberg – not a deepfake as some believed.

Gadot’s Diana appears at the end of Fury of the Gods, showing up at Billy Batson’s funeral to repair the Wizard’s staff and resurrect Billy (read our full explainer of the ending here). But, both due to how it looked in the movie and some set visit photos that emerged featuring Gadot’s body double Taylor Cahill, some thought it was Gadot’s face digitally edited onto Cahill’s body.

However, Sandberg said on Twitter yesterday that that’s not the case, and that it was the need to shot the scene remotely that was actually a culprit.

“A certain cameo in ‘Shazam! Fury Of the Gods’ had to be shot in England, but I couldn’t go because of a visa issue so I directed remotely,” he said, also sharing a video of him editing the scene with Gadot. “It wasn’t a deepfake as some believe.”

Explaining further in a reply to one of the tweets sharing the photos of Cahill, Sandberg said, “We shot the scene with Taylor to figure out what coverage we then needed to get with Gal since she couldn’t make it to Atlanta. It’s also Taylor’s body with the wizards head on it. There is absolutely no deepfaking going on. When you see Gal it’s 100% her.”

The cast and crew of Shazam! Fury of the Gods have been vocal about behind-the-scenes going-ons and the DCU at large since the sequel’s debut. Sandberg previously responded to the movie’s middling reviews, and star Zachary Levi has been commenting on rumors that Dwayne Johnson blocked him from a cameo in Black Adam.
