Plans to add a “burial zone” to a new chapel on his £3.7 million estate have been submitted to the charttopper’s local council.

The Castle On The Hill singer’s proposals for the boat-shaped place of worship have already been approved – but he now hopes planners will also let him have a crypt.

Latest plans state the 2metre by 1.8metre burial zone will be “beneath penetration through slab” in the Anglo Saxon-style chapel.

Original designs for the twostorey building included a 48ft tower, pews and stained glass windows. The burial zone will be in the nave, in front of the pews.

The private prayer retreat will be warmed by an eco-friendly air source heat pump and Ed now wants permission to alter the service enclosure that will conceal it. He also wants two more windows in the chapel and a 30cm extension to its stair tower. Ed, 30, who has notched up 13 No1 singles, won permission in 2019 to build his “private place of retreat” which will be for “contemplation and prayer, for celebration of key life and family milestones, family and social gatherings, marriages, christenings”.

The chapel will be built towards the eastern boundary of his 16-acre property, Wynneys Hall, in Dennington, East Suffolk, which he shares with wife Cherry, 29, and their 16-month-old daughter, Lyra.

Explaining its position, Ed’s fatherin-law Matthew Seaborn wrote in a planning document: “The rising of the sun is relevant both in the Abrahamic and oriental traditions and in the more environmentally led philosophies of the present day.”

It will also mean Ed’s guests can “meet, celebrate and meditate in peace and safety from disturbance”.

Getting a thumbs-up for the chapel was a victory for Ed. His plans were nearly thwarted when Dennington Parish Council grumbled about the “unusual” use of the building.
