Former president of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA)  Ashish Shelar currently the Mumbai chief of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), was on Friday unanimously appointed as MCA’s representative for the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held on October 18 at the Board’s headquarters in Churchgate. Shelar’s candidature was proposed by Apex Council member Ajinkya Naik and seconded by Kaushik Godbole.

Later in the Emergent Apex Council meeting, MCA president Dr Vijay Patil too proposed Shelar’s name for the BCCI meeting.

“Be it resolved that Shri Ashish Shelar be appointed as the representative of Mumbai Cricket Association to attend the Annual General Meeting of the BCCI to be held on 18th October, 2022.  Be it further resolved that Shri Ashish Shelar shall also participate in the proceedings of the BCCI Elections to be held on 18th October, 2022,” proposer Naik stated in a document.

Shelar is tipped to get an office-bearer’s post in the BCCI. It was widely speculated that he could become the MCA president after a recent Supreme Court ruling allowed Members of Parliament and MLAs to contest polls in cricket bodies.

With Shelar set for a BCCI post, former India batsman and ex-chairman of the national selection committee Sandeep Patil is a firm favourite to get the top MCA post.

MCA, who had earlier announced September 28 for the polls, is all set to hold its elections on October 20 now. A confirmation could be out today.
