Sheridan Smith and George Alagiah make cancer connections

Celebrities and patients united to pose for the intimate portraits by the renowned photographer in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. George, 66, was diagnosed in 2014 with stage four bowel cancer and returned to TV this year following treatment.

He recalled: “The challenge at first was getting my cancer diagnosis straight in my head – despite having a successful career and loving family, here I was being told I was dying.”

Mother-of-three Mary Huckle, who was diagnosed in the same year as George, shared the frame with him.

Sheridan, 41, lost her father Colin to cancer in 2016 and says it led her to go into a “massive meltdown”.

She met Manchester-based nurse Suad Ibrahim, 32, whose own dad succumbed to the disease.

“Connecting with others who have been touched by cancer can help you to feel less alone,” Sheridan said, as she backed next month’s Macmillan Coffee Mornings.

Campaigner Lauren Mahon, 37 – who worked with the late Dame Deborah James – took part, six years after her diagnosis, as did Fleabag actor Kadiff Kirwan, 33, whose mum died in May.
