The businessman has played a key role in a number of talent competitions over the years and catapulted numerous musicians to fame. Cowell first shot to fame he was a judge on the first ever series of Pop Idol in 2001 – a show he and the show creator Simon Fuller had pitched to ITV.
The mogul became well known for his scathing comments and reducing contestants to tears.
