Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Night event scheduled for May 20 in China at 8 PM local time (5:30 PM IST). The tech giant took it to the Chinese social media platform Weibo to announce the Snapdragon Night event. It is expected that the company will showcase the new Snapdragon mobile platform. Rumours suggest that Qualcomm may unveil the much anticipated Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ and 7 Gen 1 mobile platforms.
Qualcomm has not confirmed what’s in store at the event. Still, considering the numerous reports, those two chipsets will likely debut at the Snapdragon Night event. Last year, Qualcomm revealed the new naming conventions for its chipsets, starting with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and now Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 would be the first 7-series chipset to adopt Qualcomm’s new naming convention.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, an incremental upgrade to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, is rumoured to be fabricated on TSMC’s 4nm process node. The new chipset is expected to feature a Cortex-X2 prime core, 3x Cortex A710 performance cores, and 4x Cortex A510 efficiency cores. As per rumours, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ would offer a 10 per cent increase in CPU performance and a minor improvement in GPU prowess compared to the former. Further, a switch to TSMC’s 4nm fabrication is expected to offer better thermal performance than Samsung’s 4nm process node used for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
A number of manufacturers, including Motorola, Xiaomi and OnePlus and more, are expected to announce Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ powered smartphones in the coming months. Rumours suggest that Motorola Frontier will be the first smartphone to come with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chipset.
Now coming to the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, it is said to be an octa-core chipset, replacing last year’s Snapdragon 778G chipset. According to reports, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 would feature 4x ARM Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.36GHz and 4x ARM Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. And it is expected to come with the Adreno 662 graphics unit.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is expected to be seen on the upcoming mid-range 5G smartphones. The chipset is expected to make its first appearance on Oppo Reno 8 next week.
