Sony recently unveiled its financial results for the 2021 fiscal year, which revealed some disappointing news regarding the company’s flagship hardware product in the PlayStation 5.
According to Sony, the company has sold over 19.3 million units of the PS5 so far. However, Sony has massively missed the company’s sales targets for the console’s second fiscal year, with only 11.5 million PlayStation 5 units sold compared to the original forecast of 14.8 million units being sold by now. This puts the console’s sales trajectory behind by around 3.3 million units.
The company has missed the goal due to the ongoing crisis surrounding the lack of components required to develop the PS5, which continues to be under high demand, even though it has been around 1.5 years since the console released.

Even with the disappointing sales for the PS5 in FY2021, Sony continues to pin huge expectations for the console to succeed in the upcoming year, as the company hopes to sell around 18 million consoles from April 2022 to March 2023, which is quite close to the amount of PlayStation 5 units Sony has sold during the console’s first 18 months.
Sony is banking on the fact that the cloudy skies of component shortages will soon start to drift away. However, it’s unclear as to what extent the console manufacturer will have to worry about the lack of parts. In the end, it seems like buying a PlayStation 5 in 2022 and 2023 will be much easy compared to the first 18 months, when players were forced to buy from scalpers at high costs due to the extremely high demand and low supply.
