Last year saw the surprise announcement of a feature film based on the hit PlayStation racing franchise, Gran Turismo.

Over the past few months, several reports revealed details about the film’s plot and cast, with actors such as Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou joining in.

With Neil Blomkamp at the helm as director, the film’s production began in November 2022, with a release year of 2023.

At CES 2023, fans received the film’s first ever footage, which feature some behind-the-scenes chatter from some of the cast members. Along with that, we also got to see some of the film’s racing scenes, which eerily look similar to the games from the Polyphony Digital-developed series.

Like the cast mentioned in the recent sneak peek, the film will have “heart-pounding action, drama, a love story and bad-ass action.” Furthermore, at CES 2023, Blomkamp and producers Asad Qizilbash and Sanford Panitch shared more details about the film’s production as well.

Gran Turismo is based on the true story of racing car driver, Jann Mardenborough. The plot summary states that, “The film is the ultimate wish-fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver.”

Along with some new details of the film, Sony Pictures also announced that it will release exclusively in theatres on August 11. In the end, it will be interesting to see how the movie fares in comparison to other adaptations of video games, especially from the racing genre.
