Sony today announced the successor to last year’s Xperia 1 III, dubbed Xperia 1 IV. For a premium price tag of $1,599 (Rs 1,23,525), the fourth generation Xperia 1 offers top-of-the-line specifications, including a 4K 120Hz OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, a 5,000mAH battery with an included 30W charger and quad-camera setup with a proprietary continuous optical zoom lens from the Japanese smartphone maker
The Xperia 1 IV follows the same boxy design language as the previous Xperia 1 series smartphones. The mark IV features a 6.5-inch 4K OLED panel with a 3840×1844 pixels resolution, a refresh rate of 120Hz and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. The OLED panel on the Xperia 1 IV is said to be 50 percent brighter than the older panel. Furthermore, the panel covers 100 per cent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and supports HDR playback. Like every other Android flagship out there, the Xperia 1 IV also comes with Gorilla Glass Victus protection.
Under the hood, Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset powers the smartphone. The smartphone comes with 256GB/512GB of internal storage paired with 12GB RAM. The battery has been upgraded to 5000mAh from 45000mAH on the Xperia 1 III. It supports 30W wired fast charging in addition to wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. The smartphone runs a near-stock Android 12. Further, the mark IV comes with a side-mounted fingerprint reader, and IP68 water and dust resistivity.
On the audio side of things, the Xperia I IV features a 3.5mm audio jack, a rarity these days and full-range stereo speakers, which include an extra booster unit. The mark IV comes with support for Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res audio and 360 Reality Audio.
The main highlight of Sony’s latest smartphone is its rear camera array which as usual carries a ZEISS branding and now includes a continuous zoom lens. The rear camera setup consists of a trio of 12MP sensors – a primary, a telephoto and an ultrawide camera paired with a 3D Time of Flight sensor. Moreover, the primary and ultrawide camera comes with Optical Image Stabilisation while all the three sensors come with support for dual pixel PDAF. The camera system is capable of recording 4k 120fps videos, and the HDR videos. On the front, the smartphone has a 12MP camera.
