Spain is popular with Britons all year-round, with many jetting off for city breaks in the cooler months and hot beach-side holidays in summer. But even for those undecided, the country’s wide range of desirable destinations means travellers are never too far from quaint coastal spots even when in the heart of a city.

Barcelona is known for being a coastal city with a unique Catalan culture, beautiful beaches, and world-renowned landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell.

While many people visit to roam the bustling streets and explore the thriving food scene, avid travel bloggers have named a nearby town as an unmissable nearby spot.

Posting on her TikTok account, Emma Denley (@dens_destinations) named Sitges as “a must-do day trip from Barcelona”.

Accessible by train for less than £10, the seaside location is just southwest of the cosmopolitan capital.

Emma explained that visitors can make use of the railway connections and get a return ticket from Barcelona to Sitges. for just £9.

The journey takes less than one hour, averaging between 30 to 40 minutes.

According to Google Maps, the best route is to hop on the train at Barcelona-Sants station and get the R2S towards “Estación de tren Sant Vicenç De Calders”.

With frequent departures every 20 minutes, visitors don’t have to plan ahead more than one hour before they want to arrive in Sitges.

Once the train arrives in the coastal town, it is just a short 500m walk from the station to the beach – which be seen as soon as you step off the train.

Sitges is located in Spain’s Catalonia region, backed by the mountainous Parc Natural del Garraf.

Though it shares the shoreline with other idyllic destinations, the sandy spot is one of the most loved – known for its Mediterranean beaches and seafront promenade lined with grand mansions.

In the heart of Sitges, a compact old town and surrounding streets are filled with shops, restaurants, and a bustling nightlife scene for late visitors.

And according to many returning travellers, it is remarkably unchanged compared to most Spanish beach resorts.

There is, however, a mass of locals who make up the 30,000 people population that live and work in Sitges, many of whom do ordinary jobs instead of pandering to the tourist trade.

For people wanting to spend more than a day in the small town, the closest airport is Barcelona-El Prat (BCN), located roughly 15 miles away.

Other nearby airports are Reus (REU) (34.04 miles), Girona Costa Brava (GRO) (67.19 miles), and Lleida-Alguaire (ILD) (74.2 miles).
