Pune-based former India Test player Shobha Pandit, 66, made it to the Wankhede Stadium to cast her vote at the Mumbai Cricket Association elections on Thursday, despite not being in the best of health.

Not in the best of health

Pandit, coping with the after effects of a severe leg injury and a cerebral stroke, travelled to the city and was cheerful despite the long journey. “I almost lost my left leg due to the fault of a doctor. It almost reached amputation stage. I underwent an operation for cellulitis septicemia on my leg in 2013. I also had a cerebral stroke for which I have been given a stick and a belt.

Good team must come in

“But, I never miss the MCA elections. Very few girls from Mumbai have an opportunity to vote. Secondly, we should make sure that a good team comes in for the betterment of the MCA. And of course,I look forward to meeting my colleagues,” Pandit told mid-day on Thursday. The opening batter, who represented the country in eight Tests and three ODIs, appreciated the good treatment dished out to her.

“I have been very fortunate to be looked after like a VIP. They have given me a room to stay in the Garware Club. I have been given transport too. I am not sure who has done it, but there are people who are doing it. I was ready to come by bus [from Pune] and not miss the elections, because Bombay had given me a name [in the game] and so I need to do something for the game and the betterment of the MCA,” Pandit remarked.
