Ronnie O’Sullivan is next up. The Rocket, who matched Stephen Hendry on seven Snooker World Championships this year, is on a video link from Dubai.

He tells Gary Lineker: “I just love the game, I love competing! When you love what you do, you can’t wait to get out of bed every morning and do it.

“The top players rise to the biggest occasion. The Crucible is a venue like no other, the pressure it provides can make you or break you.”

The snooker world No 1 adds when asked if he’ll overtake Hendry in 2023: “When I first turned pro, I was happy with one World Championship. I always remember that and never try to get greedy.

“Each one is a bonus really. If I was to get eight, fantastic, but it’s really tough these days because there’s a lot of young talent. We’ll have to wait and see!

“I don’t know if I’m going to go for an eighth but I’ll have a good idea a week before if I’m in a good enough shape for it. If my form is good, I’ve got a chance.”
