St George Illawarra captain Ben Hunt has shot down fears he’ll reject the Dragons and sign with a new club amid reports of a contract skirmish.
Despite playing a shining role in another disappointing Dragons season and starring in Queensland’s State of Origin series triumph, the 32-year-old is yet to ink a new contract with the joint-venture club.
The Dragons reportedly lowballed the halfback with an offer of $700,000 a year, considerably short of the $850,000-$875,000 per year he was said to have wanted, sparking word that he could depart St George Illawarra when his contract expires at the end of 2023.

Although players aren’t allowed to talk with rival clubs until 12 months out from their contracts ending, Hunt has reportedly already held discussions with the Dolphins, Bulldogs and Titans.
But following the Dragons’ 24-22 win over Wests Tigers on Sunday, the veteran playmaker emphasised his commitment to the Red V.
“Every day there seems to be (new reports) popping up,” Hunt said.
“I’ll just wait until the season’s over and I’ve only got one more week.
“We’ll get it sorted out and we’re working through it. I enjoy the club and I’m happy to stay.”

It’s feasible if Hunt and the Dragons agree to terms on a new deal that rising halfback Jayden Sullivan will leave the club.
The 20-year-old is contracted to the Dragons until the end of 2025, but will likely seek an immediate release if Hunt re-signs with St George Illawarra, stifling his bid to become a starting NRL halfback.

The Dragons reportedly knocked back Hunt when he asked for his next contract to be tied to the fate of coach Anthony Griffin.
The Dragons mentor denied whispers of a rift in the camp when asked following Sunday’s win against the Tigers.
“I haven’t got any idea about that,” Griffin said.
“Last week was a good week and, although today wasn’t pretty, to win gives you enjoyment and belief.”
