From April 1, millions of households saw a five percent rise on the compulsory charge.

For example, in England, if someone were paying the average Band D council tax of £1,966 a year, with a five percent increase, this would mean an extra £98.30 paid across the year.

Councils are able to levy a maximum of a 4.99 percent increase in council tax without a local vote, with many local councils opting to do so this year.

However, some councils have been given special dispensation to raise council tax higher, according to the County Councils Network.
