A 27-year record was broken when Harrison Kerr crossed the finish line to win the 2022 men’s Stawell Gift on Easter Monday.

Kerr cross the line in a time of 11.85 seconds – the fastest in the event since 1995 when Glenn Crawford ran it in 11.79 seconds.

The Victorian sprinter was the pre-race favourite, and started off a 9.25m handicap.

“I’ve had family members compete here and my brother lives locally so I’ve been up and down (to Stawell) a few times,” the 22-year-old said.

“I just wasn’t ready (to win until now), I wasn’t going to be able to run those sort of times.

“I just needed the right prep to set up for it.”

The women’s sprint was won by Queensland teenager Carla Bull, who scraped home to win the final in 13.77 seconds from a six-metre handicap.

That race had to be decided by a photo.

“Everyone brings their best to the final,” Bull said, who revealed she had battled illness leading up to the race.

“At halfway everyone was close and in my head I was just ‘focus on the end, focus on the end’.

“That’s all I could think.”

Both winners pocket $40,000 for the victory.
